The Cost of a Straight Line
A straight line looks like the cheap option. Two points, no deviation, the shortest distance and so the least material, the least time, the fewest decisions to make. Every first sketch of a road or a railway or a pipeline is drawn straight. Every finished one bends. The bends are not failures of nerve. They are the places where the real price of the straight line was quoted, and where somebody decided not to pay it.
What makes a line expensive is almost never the ground. Cuttings and embankments are solved problems; the arithmetic of moving earth has been well understood since the middle of the nineteenth century, and a competent engineer can price a hillside to within a few percent. What cannot be priced so easily is everything that is already there. A farm whose two halves stop being one farm. A church with a graveyard on the wrong side of the alignment. A town that has spent two hundred years arranging itself around a market square and will not be persuaded that the square is negotiable.
The bend is the negotiation
Look at any map of an old railway and you can read the balance of power in the curve radii. Where the line runs dead straight for twenty miles, somebody owned all of it, or nobody owned any of it. Where it swings out in a long shallow arc and comes back, there was a house at the centre of the arc belonging to a person the company could not overrule. Where it kinks sharply — a compound curve, two changes of direction inside a mile — there was a dispute that was settled late, after the earthworks had begun.
The engineers of the period wrote about this without embarrassment. Deviation was a line item, and the deviation clause in an enabling act was among the most carefully negotiated parts of it. A company that secured the right to move its alignment by a hundred yards in either direction had bought itself the ability to lose an argument cheaply. One that did not had to win every argument, which is a much more expensive way to build a railway.
The cheapest curve is the one you are permitted to draw. The next cheapest is the one you can draw after a single meeting. Everything beyond that is litigation with a gradient attached.
Modern practice has the same structure with different vocabulary. Route options go out to consultation, objections come back, and the alignment that gets built is the one that survived the objections rather than the one that minimised earthworks. We call this stakeholder management. It is the deviation clause wearing a lanyard.
What straightness actually buys
None of which is an argument for bending. A straight alignment is genuinely faster to run, cheaper to maintain, and easier to signal. Curves wear rail on the outside of the radius, force cant and speed restrictions, and complicate every subsequent intervention on the route. A kink introduced in 1846 to avoid a rectory is still costing money in 2026, long after the rectory and everybody who cared about it have gone. That is the real asymmetry: the cost of the bend is permanent, and the cost of the fight is not.
So the question worth asking about any piece of infrastructure is not whether it is straight but whether its bends still correspond to anything. Some do. The line that curves around a floodplain is curving around a floodplain that is still there. Others are fossils — the frozen shape of an argument whose parties are all dead, defended now only by the fact that moving it would be disruptive.
- A bend that avoids a hazard is engineering.
- A bend that avoided a person is history.
- A bend that nobody can account for is usually the second kind, undocumented.
The same pattern turns up wherever something long-lived has to pass through something that was already occupied. Software has it. Legal codes have it. The reason a codebase’s oddest function signature cannot be simplified is very often that it once went round a rectory.
The discipline
What follows from this, practically, is a habit rather than a rule: when you inherit a bend, find out what it went around before you decide whether to keep it. Not to straighten everything — most bends are load-bearing and some are the only reason the thing got built at all. But an undocumented deviation is a claim without evidence, and after long enough it starts to be defended for its own sake, as though the curve were the point.
Straightness is not a virtue. Knowing why you are not straight is.
